Why SAMSARA really died… for me… (Part 1)

Back in 1996 a friend (we’ll call him Scott) and I started a band we called “The God Project”. It was the two of us, another guy who could barely show up for practice every other week, plus the drum machine. The music was quite a bit more complex than anything we had been involved with prior to this time. We tried to get a real drummer to come sit in with us but he just couldn’t wrap his head around what we were doing, despite his extensive training. Things feel apart and I eventually left for another band I felt would have a better chance of performing out, which at the time was my concern. Things didn’t work out with the other band, pretty much surrounding the spoiled rich kid that played lead guitar. I’m ok with people suggesting lyrics to me, but telling me how to sing, you’d better fuck off immediately if you think I’ll put up with that shit. I took some time off from music entirely and took a trip to Upstate New York to clear my head. When I got back, I felt that draw again to make music. I ran into Scott and we began hanging out again. I appologised for my earlier departure and asked him if he would like to start something up again, maybe heading in a new direction. He agreed and we started over from scratch. During my hiatas I had spent many a sleepless night up writing poetry and free writing in general, so I had tons of material, some of which still hasn’t been seen or heard. We began collaborating on some new material that Scott had already created. Things were going quite well, but we needed a bassist to really thicken the sound. After asking around the scene we wound up tracking down a guy that I was previously friends with and who understood the musical direction we were heading in. (we’ll call him Josh). I can’t remember how many songs we created but I think it would be safe to say three.

To be continued…
