Workin’ for the Weekend

This weekend I headed down to my buddy Don’s house in Augusta to get the fuck out of town and take a break from everything. With Matt moving out and Josh moving in for the past two weeks or so, things have been exhausting.

Don drove up Friday night and picked me up around 6:30pm. Just outside of Augusta we called for Pizza, picked it up, then settled in for a night of movies and games. Don picked up a 42″ HDTV back in July, partially prompting my purchase of one, and we decided to put it through it’s paces. If the only way you’ve ever seen an HDTV in action is at a retail store, or a friend’s house who doesn’t have any high-definition equipment hooked up to it, you haven’t seen what these TVs can do. I do want to clarify that when I say high-definition equipment I don’t mean a DVD player, since DVD players don’t output high definition signals. I mean an XBOX 360, Playstation 3, or a high-definition receiver from your cable or satellite company. The difference is out of this world. A common comparison is when you first saw a DVD after so many years of watching VHS tapes. The only problem is that you find yourself watching programs and movies that you would never watch otherwise (Le Mans anyone?). Now don’t get me wrong, you can hook a Progressive Scan DVD Player up to a HDTV and get a really good picture out of it. At any rate, Don has a high definition DirecTV receiver and an XBOX 360 so we basked in it’s glory till the early morning hours Friday night. Last Spring, Don left his job in Bangor and headed down to Augusta for a job. Since he has been down there, he hasn’t had much time to play any games or watch any movies on that big TV of his. Well, we fixed that for sure. When we work up on Saturday morning, we didn’t stop playing games or watching high def movies till 5 or so. Then, realizing that we had laundry to do, we pulled ourselves away for a few hours to get that and some shopping done. When we got back we watched part of a movie, but decided that was cutting into our game time. Another late one that ended at 2AM or so. If I may make a suggestion, if you live in an apartment building, you should play Guitar Hero-type games first since it sucks turning the sound way down and trying to stay in time with the game. Sunday was a bit more gaming in the morning followed by some high-def football courtesy of DirecTV’s NFL Sunday Ticket package. At 3:30PM we headed back to Brewer and Don dropped me off at my house. It was my pleasure to find that Josh, my new roommate, had cleaned the remainder of the house that I hadn’t gotten to in the last two weeks. It’s so nice to have a roommate that cares what the place looks like and not how many action figures and/or crappy DVDs he can buy on clearance. I napped out for a while then finished up my homework and watched the Sox Yanks game with Josh and his little sister (they are not Boston fans BTW). All-in-all it was a great weekend that I will remember.
